BLACK MEN IDENTIFYING
THEIR PAIN

AND RECLAIMING
THEIR POWER

LEARN MORE

The Invisible Ache is about pain, but it is also about resistance, resilience, and the power of sharing our stories.

OUR MISSION

In America, Black men grow up learning that strength means hiding our pain and swallowing our anger. We privilege independence over community, strength over softness, and assertiveness over vulnerability. We learn that Black male bodies are perceived as threats, and grapple with pressures to succeed anyway: to do right by our families and communities, and to break free from dehumanizing stereotypes that exist because of systemic racism and institutionalized inequality. All of this pressure costs us—threatening our bodies, minds, and spirits at home, at work, and in our communities.

As a result, the conversation about mental health and wellbeing has reached a breaking point for Black boys and men. Our mission is to reverse the downward trend toward depression and suicide and to move instead toward wholeness, joy, shared vulnerability and collective power. The Invisible Ache is about pain, but it is also about resistance and resilience. When we step into our full humanity and make space for softness to exist alongside strength, we reclaim access to something we have long been denied: our freedom.

THE BOOK

THE INVISIBLE ACHE

A personal history of pain and resilience and an empowering guide to health and wellbeing for Black boys, men, and their loved ones.

Early in his career, actor Courtney B. Vance lost his father to suicide. Recently, he lost his godson to the same fate. By sharing their stories and his own, Vance seeks to welcome Black boys and men into the conversation about mental health and wellbeing—one that has historically sidelined and minimized their pain, and left them without adequate tools and resources to cope.

With The Invisible Ache, Courtney B. Vance seeks to change this trajectory. Along with professional expertise and insight from famed psychologist Dr. Robin L. Smith, Vance explores issues of grief, relationships, identity, and race through the telling of his own most formative experiences. The book offers Black boys, men, and those who love them a map toward navigating life’s ups and downs, reclaiming mental well-being, and examining broken pieces to find whole, full-hearted living.
